Research topic/area: Biomedical Devices – We are evaluating the performance of wearable inertial measurement units (IMU’s) in measuring joint angles of the lower limbs during walking trails. Ultimately these sensors would be incorporated into smart prostheses and orthoses that would assist small children with cerebral palsy in developing the correct gait. We make use of a Kalman filter to obtain joint angles from the IMU data, which we then compare with motion capture data (the golden standard in the industry) to determine accuracy.
