Carlos Gonçalves, MIT Portugal student, interviewed by "90 Segundos de Ciência"

Carlos Gonçalves MIT Portugal EDAM-LTI PhD student at the University of Minho was interviewed on "90 Segundos de Ciência" about his project focused on the development of a compression sleeve to use in the treatment of swollen arm, a very common pathology in breast cancer patients.

The compression sleeve that is being developed under his project simulates the massages done by physiotherapists using "sensors and actuators that are able to replicate the 5 stages of compression thanks to this textile material". The massage is applied from the wrist to the shoulder, going through the different stages of compression.

This PhD project is a partnership between the University of Minho, the Centre for Nanotechnology and Smart Materials (CeNTI) and the MIT and is currently under a national licensing process according to the researcher "we are working on the necessary procedures for a European patent aklready thinking in a european commercialization of the project".

Suscity Project highlighted in "Mentes que Brilham", a Porto Canal TV Show

The MIT Portugal Program project SUSCITY was once again highlighted in the media. Maribel Santos is the head of the research team from the Algoritmi Center of the University of Minho who is developing the "Suscity Buildings dashboard", a digital platform for urban energy management. The researcher was recently interviewed by "Mentes que Brilham", a Porto Canal TV Show, to explain how the online platform works and its many features.

The Suscity Project was once again highlighted in the media. The Buildings dashboard is digital platform for urban energy management, which is being developed under the scope of the MIT Portugal Program in a partnership with the University of Minho. The article is focused on the solutions presented by the dashboard to increase energy efficiency in buildings and the importance of taking measures as simple as changing windows, adapt the air conditioning to the building´ conditions or use photovoltaic panels in houses with the ideal solar orientation.

The platform will allow users to “run a diagnosis of energy consumption in these buildings and see what's the impact from an environmental point of view”, says Cláudia Sousa Monteiro MIT Portugal PhD Candidate and researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico.

According to Maribel Santos, head of the research team at the University of Minho "citizens can then use this data to make decisions and share their own information with the system, making it available to other citizens and continuously updated". 

The Suscity Building Dashboard is now in its final stage of research and it is foreseen that the control panel will be made public over the next year, through a website where anyone can have access to a map of the city, with information about the buildings and their consumption.

João Bigotte opinion article about the future of the automotive industry in Transportes em Revista Magazine

João Bigotte, MIT Portugal Program Faculty wrote an pdf opinion article (223 KB) that was published in Transportes em Revista Magazine following this year´s MPP Roundtable on "The Future of Automotive Industry International Roundtable".

The Assistant Professor of Technological Change and Innovation of the MIT Portugal Program at the University of Coimbra spoke about the three main concepts that will, in his opinion, dictate the future of mobility and of the automotive industry.

Francisco Duarte, MPP PhD Candidate, interviewed in 90 Segundos de Ciência about his project Pavnext

Francisco Duarte, MIT Portugal PhD Candidate, was interviewed by 90 Segundos de Ciência, a Antena 1 Radio Program focused on promoting Portuguese researchers and their work.

The MPP Transportation Systems candidate and researcher at the University of Coimbra spoke about his project Pavnext, a speed reduction system that induces the deceleration of vehicles without causing damage, noise or any discomfort to the passengers. The equipment acts as in a similar fashion to a carpet that when placed on the floor actively reduces the speed of the vehicles by extracting kinetic energy, with a minimal impact on the automobile. Contrary to existing systems, this one absorbs the vehicles’ energy and makes it slow down safely, without any action of the driver and even without being perceptible since it causes no discomfort.

This is the third prize won by Pavnext since December 2016 when he was honored with the first prize at the Road Safety Innovation Award by ACP. Since then he already won the Coimbra semifinal and Final of the Big Smart Cities Competition and was selected to represent Portugal at the European Final of the ClimateLaunchpad competition in October.
