The Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program (SES PhD) is a three- to four-year degree jointly offered at each of the Portuguese Institutions participating in the MIT Portugal Sustainable Energy Systems Program. The objective of the PhD Program on Sustainable Energy Systems is to use a multi-disciplinary approach to educate a new generation of sustainability-aware leaders with expertise in energy systems and economics. A focus on energy system design and analysis, research, and leadership and entrepreneurship provides graduates with the tools to be at the forefront of sustainable energy systems development.

The PhD Program emphasizes the policy and technology development necessary for the successful design and implementation of alternative energy strategies. Students have the opportunity to learn about the practical application of energy strategies through real-world case study research in conjunction with corporate and industry partners or affiliates.

The Program includes one year of coursework, including doctoral seminars. Students conduct dissertation research for 2 to 3 years, in the following areas:

  • Sustainable Built Environment
  • Energy Planning, including Economics
  • Smart Energy Networks

The SES Doctoral Program welcomes candidates with engineering or management backgrounds. Candidates must be highly motivated to conduct innovative research activities, and must also demonstrate strong communication, leadership and entrepreneurship skills.

SES PhD graduates will have the tools to play leadership roles in implementing sustainable energy policies and developing new business opportunities.


Candidates to the Doctoral Program on Sustainable Energy Systems must hold a Bologna 2nd cycle degree OR a master's degree OR a five-year degree (Licenciatura) in engineering, science or management. All candidates must demonstrate that they have adequate scientific capabilities to be engaged in a degree in this area (i.e., sufficient previous coursework in sciences, academic papers, etc.)


The Sustainable Energy Systems Doctoral Program is a unified program for all the different universities that are offering the SES PhD Degree. While each university may implement the program somewhat differently, the following pdf guidelines are accepted and followed by all of the participating universities.


The SES Doctoral Program is a joint initiative offered by three universities in Portugal collaborating in the context of the MIT Portugal Program including the University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior Técnico, IST; Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão, ISEG; Faculty of Sciences, FCUL), the University of Porto (Faculty of Engineering, FEUP) and the University of Coimbra (Faculty of Economy, FEUC;  Faculty of Sciences and Technology, FCTUC). All the universities share a common core curriculum, and students can personalize their Program by selecting elective courses at any of the five schools that meet their specific interests and course requirements.


Tuition fee

The tuition fee is 2.750 euros for IST/ISEG and University of Coimbra. The tuition fee is 3.000 Euros for FCUL and FEUP. For FEUP international students please confirm if extra tuition fees may apply here.



UL (IST and ISEG): 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays. Each course has a duration of 2 hours per week. On average each student has 2 or 3 days of classes per week depending on the number of courses that he/she chooses.

At FEUP, classes typically run 3 days per week, from Tuesday to Thursday. Three of the four classes are taught from 18.00h to 20.00h, the 4th class will run from 16:00 to 18:00, during an afternoon in which there is already a class at 18.00h.

At UC classes run on a full time basis, 3 days per week, typically from Thursday to Saturday.
