The Program’s selection process is carried out by professors from Portuguese institutions involved in each degree, together with their MIT counterparts.

The following factors are evaluated in the review of each application:

  • Academic grades
  • Professional CV
  • Motivation letter
  • Interview (evaluation of candidates may involve an interview in English, which may take place in person or via videoconference/Skype)
  • Reference letters

A GRE exam may be submitted by the candidate for evaluation, but is not mandatory.

Evaluation Appeal:

If the candidate does not agree with the evaluation of the Selection Committee of the PhD Program, the candidate has a deadline of 10 days (work days) after the results announcement to present a complaint through e-mail, at the time of the preliminary hearing, in the terms of the Código do Procedimento Administrativo (Code of Administrative Procedure). Upon the final decision of the Selection Committee an appeal can be submitted by the candidate to FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP), during the 15 work days after notification.

  • Match Factor (MF): the match factor describes the matching between the research interests of the candidates within the Sustainable Energy Systems area and the research interests of the schools in the sustainable energy systems. It also evaluates the years of engagement with the MIT Portugal Program (in the cases where the candidate is already an MIT Portugal student) and the interview that is conducted to the best ranked candidates.

Overall Score based on 100%

A Minimum score of 70 (0-100) in the Academic Record is required in the MIT Portugal PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems. Candidates with a lower grade than this are excluded from further evaluation.
