Transportation Systems | Doctoral Program | Tuition & Financial Aid

The cost of tuition at IST and FEUP is €3000 per year and tuition at FCTUC is €2750 per year. There are no additional educational fees that the student incurs while enrolled in the PhD program.

The cost of living varies between the cities of Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra; however, it should be possible to live comfortably (housing, food, transportation, etc.) on a budget of €700-€900 per month.

Financial aid packages are available to some incoming students. In order to be considered for financial aid, which comes directly from FCT (Portuguese Science Foundation), applicants must check a box in the online application form on the MIT-Portugal program website indicating that they would like to be considered for a FCT scholarship.

Financial aid from FCT covers the cost of tuition throughout the duration of the PhD program, contingent on students making satisfactory progress within the program. In addition, a monthly stipend of €980 is provided to cover living expenses.

In rare instances, it may be possible for students to obtain a tuition waiver for an entire year in exchange for teaching one class during one semester. This usually entails about 4 hours of teaching and 10-12 hours spent on course preparation per week for one semester.
