André Pina's presentation - "Designing the transition to sustainable energy systems: The Green Islands Project in the Azores" - was awarded with the third place for "Best Presentation" in the recent 9th Technical Workshop on Environment and Alternative Energy. The workshop was promoted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Center for Pollution Prevention (C3P) and was held at the European Space Agency (ESA) between 15-18 November in Noordwijk – Holland. André Pina is a PhD student at Instituto Superior Técnico under the MIT Portugal Program. André started his PhD in 2007 and since then has been committed to the Green Islands project. This project is being developed in straight collaboration with Azores government and MIT Portugal program and intends to develop new methodologies to identify cost-effective sustainable energy solutions and options utilizing natural resources that are endogenous to the area. According to the MIT Portugal student this award recognizes the impact that the project can have and the work developed by the whole team so far. André adds that "This award provides recognition to the hard work that has been developed by not only me, but all the Green Islands team, in the sense that we have been able to develop a very interesting project which can capture the attention of institutions such as NASA and ESA, which is very exciting. Personally, it is also rewarding to see a presentation being recognized by such institutions, as the work presented follows the research line of my PhD”. Was also distinguished at this workshop, the presentations given by Filippo Seracini (first prize) - University of California, San Diego - and Carugno Piera (second prize ) -Sapienza University of Rome. The workshop is held annually and features lectures by distinguished international guests, research leaders and students, that present information and ideas relevant to European and U.S. engineers and scientists interested in solving their environment and energy issues.
