| Wednesday, 01 June 2011 | IST is hosting a series of training sessions (sessões de formação) on Patents. These sessions are being organized by the IST Technology Transfer Office in a partnership with INPI, and are on subjects such as biotechnology and intelectual property, among others. | Friday, 27 May 2011 | E3 is a 1-day forum organized by MIT Portugal students seeking to add value to knowledge through the creation of synergies between academia, industry, entrepreneurs and policy makers. It will take place at Faculdade de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Lisbon, on the 30th of June. Daniela Couto, a Bioengineering PhD student at IST, is one of the organizers, and talked to us about the event. Further details are available at the website www.e3forum.org.

| Friday, 27 May 2011 | Merkebe Getachew Demissie is a second-year PhD student at IST, under the MIT Portugal Program, in the field of Transportation Systems. He is part of the research team that focuses on Intelligent Transportation Systems, working under the project CityMotion (Data Fusion for Mobility Consumers, Providers, and Planners). He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Textile Engineering at the Engineering Faculty of Bahir Dar University, in Ethiopia. Right after finishing his bachelor’s degree, in July 2005, he became a professor and research assistant at that same institution. Two years later, he joined the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, where he was awarded a scholarship for the Masters’ Programe for Key Personnel in Developing Countries (MKP) by the Swedish Institute and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency to pursue a Masters’ degree in Transportation Systems. His masters’ thesis was on ‘‘Simulation Based Performance Assessment of Mini Roundabout’’.

| Friday, 29 April 2011 | Second International Conference of Young Urban Researchers (SICYUrb) aims to gather recent researches on urban contexts from many different areas of social sciences, to discuss current theoretical and methodological issues and to promote interdisciplinary and international networking. It is intended that the meeting should be boosted by young researchers who work in urban studies and develop research in the cities - especially those who are studying in post-graduate programs but also those carrying out technical and intervention activities. The conference is in charge of the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, CIES-IUL) and co-organized by the Centre for Studies in Sociology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CesNova, FCSH-UNL) and the Institute of Sociology - University of Porto (ISFLUP).
