MIT Portugal a Presence at the Second International Engineering Systems Symposium

Tuesday, 23 June 2009 08:26

The MIT Portugal Program – and several of the program’s leaders – played a significant role in the well-attended Second International Engineering Systems Symposium held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) June 15–17, 2009.

The symposium, titled Engineering Systems: Achievements and Challenges, provided hundreds of attendees with a broad perspective on the latest advances in research, achievements in industry, and future challenges in the field. It was organized by MIT’s Engineering Systems Division (ESD) and was co-sponsored by CESUN, the Council of Engineering Systems Universities.

MIT President Dr. Susan Hockfield welcomes the symposium audience
The opening session featured a welcome by Professor Daniel Roos, co-chair of the symposium, Director of MIT Portugal at MIT, Founding Director of ESD, and Chair of CESUN’s Executive Committee. Professor Roos said the focus in 2004, when the first symposium was held, was on Engineering Systems as an emerging field; this time, it was on reviewing accomplishments and looking forward to challenges and opportunities, now that Engineering Systems is established as a discipline.

Introductory remarks were also provided by MIT President Dr. Susan Hockfield – a strong proponent of the role research universities play in promoting science, technology and innovation – and MIT President Emeritus Charles M. Vest, now president of the National Academy of Engineering in Washington, D.C.

Featured Speakers from MIT Portugal

Professor Paulo Ferrão, the Portugal Director of the MIT Portugal Program and Director of the Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), and Henk Sol – Professor of Business and ICT, Founding Dean, Faculty of Economics and Business at University of Groningen, and a member of MIT Portugal’s External Review Committee – contributed to a session on “New Global University Initiatives in Engineering Systems.”

MIT Dean of Engineering and MIT Portugal Governing Committee member Subra Suresh joined ESD Director Professor Yossi Sheffi and others for a discussion of the “MIT Perspective on Engineering Systems.” In addition, Christopher Magee, co-lead of MIT Portugal’s Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacuturing focus area and Professor of the Practice of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Systems at MIT, was one of the featured speakers during a session on methodologies and large-scale system applications.

Sustainable Energy Systems, Materials and Design-inspired Products

The ESD Symposium also featured research sessions with presentations by MIT Portugal faculty and researchers about some of the program’s work in the areas of sustainable energy systems and materials and design-inspired products. Accounts of those sessions, and links to presentation slides, are available here.

Additional content, including video of some sessions, will be available on the symposium’s website later in the summer.
