Management Strategist Partha Ghosh Presents Innovation Workshop

Wednesday, 24 June 2009

In several high-profile presentations on innovation and leadership sponsored by the MIT Portugal Program across the country, management strategist Partha Ghosh called on Portugal to “revive the spirit of Vasco de Gama."

One event was a high-level workshop titled ‘Advancing the Promise of Portugal in the 21st Century: Toward a New Leadership Resolve,’ in which Ghosh focused on Portugal’s opportunity to build on its heritage of innovation and define areas of competitive advantage. Held at Culturgest in Lisbon on June 22, 2009, the workshop stressed Portugal’s need to have a different strategy than, for example, the “BRIC” countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) do when facing competition from Eastern Europe.

Mr. Ghosh, who holds advanced degrees from MIT in chemical engineering and management, was a partner of McKinsey and Co. before starting his own leadership consultancy. He led the inaugural edition of the Leadership course in the PhD and Advanced Study programs of MIT Portugal's Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing focus area this spring.

In addition to the Lisbon workshop, Mr. Ghosh also gave presentations in both academic and informal settings at the University of Minho in Guimarães on June 17. After an afternoon seminar at the Campus Azurém, Mr. Ghosh led a group dynamics event in the scenic center of Guimarães for a group of students and faculty. The group addressed the question of what skills and tools are needed to face the changing environment for industrial and technology-based companies. The event was moderated by Professor António M. Cunha, President of the School of Engineering at the University of Minho and co-lead of MIT Portugal’s EDAM focus area.
