Alexandre Ferreira da Silva, EDAM LTI PhD student won the PVC Iberic Forum AwardHis work, entitled "PVC Formulation Study for the Manufacturing of a Smart Skin Structure based on Optical Fiber Elements", has the co-authoring of Filipe Gonçalves (TMG Automotive, MIT Portugal TME Student), Luís Ferreira and Francisco Araújo (both from FiberSensing), and José Higino Correia and Paulo Mendes (both from University of Minho), also supervising this student PhD thesis.

Alexandre Silva, enrolled at UM, follows a research activity in Engineering Design and Innovation applied to automotive industry under the theme “Automotive Smart Flooring based on photonics”, and he is a successful student due to his performance on publications, with three papers in international Journals and several presentations in international conferences. The awarded work is one of the student's research project outcomes, within the collaboration between the School of Engineering from University of Minho, the Automotive unit of Têxteis Manuel Gonçalves and FiberSensing. The result of this research is a PVC foil, manufactured in an industrial environment, with optical fiber based sensors, able to perform strain and temperature monitoring and with application in biomedical, automotive and civil engineering areas, among others.

The Award Ceremony will be held on the 23rd of March, 2011, in the Catalan Center of Plastics, in Terrassa (near Barcelona), Spain. The PVC Iberic Forum is a sectorial association integrated in the Spanish Association of Plastic Industrials (ANAIP) and the European Council of Vynil Manufactures, which represent the manufacturers and transformers of PVC, both in Portugal and Spain.
