On Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, nine MPP visiting students presented posters of their research as part of the MIT Engineering Systems Division annual PhD student poster session. The students represented the bioengineering, EDAM, transportation, and energy research areas of MPP. Poster sessions are a valuable way for students to gain experience discussing their research. Andre Fialho, bioengineering PhD student at IST, stated “As my first poster session experience, I found it really useful in several ways. I was able to present the general topic of my work and of the project that I am part of to several people who seemed very interested.” Another Bioengineering student from IST, Federico Cismondi, further commented that “Some people, familiar with your research, ask more specific and challenging questions, sometimes even criticizing what you have done. This is very positive since, in order to answer the questions properly, you need to have a deep knowledge about that field and a very mature understanding of the methods used. It is also important when you receive different points of view, since they could help on coming up with new ideas or approaches.” MIT Visiting Student Ana Costa at ESD Poster Session An ample crowd of mostly-ESD students, researchers, and faculty showed up for the poster session, which featured ESD research in areas similar to MPP, including transportation, health care, energy and environment, and extended enterprises. The MPP visiting students made up about 25% of the poster presenters. There is substantial overlap in the research interests of the students, and one of the benefits of joint events such as this is the opportunity to discover and interact with people doing work in similar areas. Reza Fazeli, an energy student from FEUP who will spend the full academic year at MIT, was enthusiastic about the experience. “It was a great chance not only to discuss with ESD faculty about my research, but also to get an update on what MIT students are dealing with in their research. I was able to chat with several researchers about the common approaches in our research and collaboration potential in the near future.” The complete roster of poster presenters is provided below.
