 Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger
Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger, a technology and innovation expert, former IBM executive and an MIT Visiting Professor will give the second talk in the MIT Portugal Program’s Distinguished Lecture Series.
The lecture series is designed to highlight cutting edge work in science and technology, bringing top innovators to Portugal to share their work relevant to education, research, industry and society. Dr. Wladawsky-Berger, who now serves as Chairman Emeritus for IBM’s Academy of Technology, will give a lecture titled “Technology, Engineering and Innovation in the Services Economy” on June 5, 2008 at IBM Portugal, Edifício “Office Oriente”.
Dr. Wladawsky-Berger’s talk will explore some of the challenges businesses face in order to realize potential benefits from advances in information technology and powerful market forces that have transformed business and society. Included in these challenges are the ability to effectively design and use highly complex, human oriented, market-facing systems and applications. The talk will also discuss the critical role of universities in conducting the necessary research and training the talent needed for these new technology-based services jobs.
Dr. Wladawsky-Berger became Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology in May 2007 when he retired from IBM as Vice President of Technical Strategy and Innovation. He was responsible for identifying emerging technologies and marketplace developments critical to the future of the IT industry, and organizing appropriate activities in and outside IBM in order to capitalize on them.
He is also a Visiting Professor at MIT’s engineering Systems Division and an Adjunct Professor in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at the Imperial College Business School. |
