Thirteen Companies Sign Affiliation Agreements
The shared goal of the Government of Portugal and the MIT Portugal Program to accelerate innovation in biotechnology in Portugal through research–industry partnerships was advanced on October 6, 2008, when four major pharmaceutical and industrial companies, as well a nine start-up biotech companies, signed affiliation agreements with MIT Portugal.
The ceremony—which coincided with the second anniversary of MIT Portugal—took place at the Program’s “Bioengineering: Trends and Opportunities” conference in Lisbon. Signing on behalf of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) was its president, Prof. João Sentieiro.

MIT Portugal Transportation Systems Workshop held at MIT |

Faculty, researchers and students from the Transportation Systems Focus Area of the MIT Portugal Program met on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus September 4-5, 2008 to discuss education and research initiatives for the coming year.
The workshop involved a number of MIT Portugal Program colleagues from Portugal as well as MIT, who discussed such topics as student recruitment, education delivery and research progress.

MIT PhD student Yang Wen presents the DynaMIT simulation tool. The future of urban transportation may be closer than we think.
Real-time traffic congestion information feeds to travellers, flexible car-sharing services and other new transportation services are all currently under development by researchers from the MIT Portugal Program.
These new innovations and others were presented at a recent MIT Portugal Program Transportation Systems workshop held July 11-15 in Lisbon. The event was attended by MIT Portugal Program faculty, students and government and industrial representatives in Transportation Systems.
Several MIT Portugal Program Transportation Systems projects hold promise for the future of urban transportation.

MIT Portugal Energy Faculty Promote Green Islands Project at Azores Conference |

MIT Portugal Program leaders in Sustainable Energy Systems promoted a groundbreaking new project that could change the way islands, like the Azores, utilize their energy resources at the AmbiTech Azores 2008 conference on July 9-11.
The Green Islands Project, which will involve the Azores and other islands and urban-islands around the globe, intends to develop new methodologies to identify cost-effective sustainable energy solutions and options utilizing natural resources that are indigenous to these areas.

Stephen Connors, MIT Research Engineer for the MIT Portugal Program and Paulo Ferrão, MIT Portugal Program Director in Portugal and Sustainable Energy Systems Co-Lead, were both keynote speakers at the conference where they discussed MIT Portugal’s energy research in general and the Green Islands Project specifically.
Also presenting was Prof. João Peças Lopes of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, another leader of the Green Islands Project.

MIT Portugal Students Compete for Innovation Prizes, Give Presentations at Ciência 2008 |

The newest cutting-edge, commercial bio-technologies could be among several presentations given by MIT Portugal PhD students from the Bio-Engineering Focus Area at the Encontro Ciência em Portugal - Ciência 2008, which takes place July 3 at the Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters in Lisbon.
Twenty-one PhD students in six Bio-Teams will offer presentations of their latest innovations derived from research collaborations with Portuguese universities, companies and research labs.
The teams of students and Principal Investigators will compete for the Biocant Ventures Prize, a 10,000 € prize for use in developing further a commercial project, and the SPI (Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação) Prize, 5,000 € in services offered by SPI including a SWOT analysis and one work session with consultants from SPI.
