EDAM | Doctoral Program | Structure

The LTI program consists of 7 semesters of classes, with 12 mandatory courses, including Industrial Internships and visits to the MIT campus, in addition to the PhD Thesis. The classes are taught in intensive blocks of one week per month, in full time regime (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm).

Lectures take place at the University of Minho (Guimarães, Portugal), Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (Porto, Portugal) and Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal), on a rotating basis. Students travel as a group throughout the Portuguese universities and live locally to attend the various courses.

Course curriculum, teaching methodologies and evaluations are carried out by a team of Portuguese and MIT professors, led by a Portuguese and an MIT professor.

LTI students are required to take an industrial internship and spend a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve months working on-site with EDAM industrial affiliates. At least three months must be spent with a single company; any time beyond this may be spent at additional companies.

The coursework of the Doctoral Program in Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI) is described in the figure below. The total of courses makes a total of 71 ECTS but at some of the participating schools (e.g. IST) only 60 ECTS are required.

A course about the experience of manufacturing based corporate life , based on the exploitation of visits to relevant companies / factories and discussion of business cases to related to the visited companies / industry sector and other active learning methods (invited visitors with significant business life experience and eventually selected movies – 3 visits and 10 business cases, several visitors are planned).

The course combines the discussion of design and manufacturing activities together with the identification and development of basic skills to analyze companies and sectors and their basic competitive positioning in different business and institutional environments, as well as the organizational politics and drama of engineering based corporate life.

The program builds on Partha Ghosh's personal experience of leading and working with Corporate, Political, and Government leaders across cultures in more than a dozen nations. It is based on a fundamental premise that irrespective of the background an individual represents, he/she has the innate leadership qualities which could be cultivated, in every person's search for a meaningful and an effective life, through well balanced use of the right and left brain in resonance with his/her inner consciousness. The Leadership we will talk about is not necessarily a set of skills that can be taught by the classical approach to education; they are personal qualities that must be uncovered, nurtured and developed in experiential learning environment, in a continuum with conventional disciplines of science and technology.
