EDAM Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI)
The Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI) doctoral program within the Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing (EDAM) focus area is offered by the University of Lisbon (Técnico Lisboa, IST), University of Minho (Escola de Engenharia, EEUM) and the University of Porto (Faculdade de Engenharia, FEUP). This program is anchored on multidisciplinary research problems, lying within an Engineering Systems framework.
The LTI PhD program considers that product and process innovation and current complex decision-making must also take into account economics, management and social aspects. This perspective is evident in the program’s structure, which groups the courses into clusters such as Design and Technology (three courses), Engineering Systems (four courses), Engineering Management (four courses), and Leadership.
As an academic program designed to be in close connection with technically advanced industries, the students must complete an internship for the development of integrated research in an industrial environment.
The LTI PhD research program is dedicated to generate new scientific knowledge and new engineering solutions to create and capture value in highly competitive industrial sectors. The scope and associated proposals of the program were defined and prepared in fruitful collaboration between faculty and industry leaders.
LTI target students
Recent graduates in engineering aiming at developing a career in technical or production management, with 2-3 years of practical experience. Typical background formation (5 years) will be mechanical engineers, materials/polymer engineers, electronic engineers, industrial engineers and chemical engineers. Industrial experience of candidates will be a preferential selection criterion. Other technical education background may be considered (e.g., physics or math), based on relevant curriculum.
LTI graduate profile
Leaders with a technological profile and able to: i) lead multidisciplinary teams, and address new and complex challenges in product development and manufacturing operations; ii) plan and manage innovation strategies of technological-based companies; and iii) develop and implement research programs under industrial environments.
