Your application can be improved by two factors:
- Good scores on the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE exam)
- Professional experience in the field to which you are applying
The GRE Exam
Submission of scores for the GRE General Test will constitute a factor of preference in the admissions process.
The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills, skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and are not related to any specific field of study.
The GRE General Test takes approximately four hours, during which time candidates complete tasks in analytical and expository writing, and multiple-choice questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning.
The test sites for the GRE General Test in Portugal are Lisbon (a computer-based exam) and Coimbra (a paper-based exam). In Lisbon, the test is offered several times per week. The GRE is also offered worldwide on a year-round basis. The exam fee is approximately US$170.
The results of the GRE take about 30 days to arrive, so you should plan your test ahead of time so that we receive it before the application period deadline. If we receive after the application deadline, the GRE results will not be considered. At the testing center on the day of the examination, you must designate “MIT Engineering Systems Division (ESD)” as the institution that will receive your exam scores. Be sure to bring to the testing center the following institutional codes for your score reporting request:
- Use the MIT reporting code: 3514 and the department code: 1612.
If you have already taken the GRE General Test, you may request that a score report be sent to MIT ESD. Please use the code numbers as indicated above, even though the Educational Testing Service website may indicate that they refer to a different department than ESD. For information on sending a report of a past exam, visit the Educational Testing Service website and select "Order Additional Score Reports." NOTE: The ETS system of institutional codes is experiencing some transition. If you are unable to enter Department Code 1612 (Engineering Systems: Other), please be sure to indicate MIT 3514 as the recipient of the test results. Please send as well a scan of the results of your test to the same address as provided for the reference letters:
