Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI)
A novel
Doctoral Program in Leaders for Technical Industries (LTI) leading to a
PhD degree is awarded jointly by the participating Portuguese Universities in the Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing (EDAM) focus
area.
The Leaders for Technical Industries program will train a new
generation of leaders for companies with a technological profile, and
enable a new European paradigm in managing product development and
production systems. Students participating in this program will have
the ability to foster the innovative application of new knowledge in
successful products and/or processes. LTI includes classroom
curriculum, industrial internships, time at MIT, and a doctoral
thesis. Students will have the opportunity to participate in applied
research projects developed under the frame of the EDAM agenda in
cooperation with MIT Portugal's Industrial Affiliates program.
LTI graduates will be capable of: 1) leading multidisciplinary teams
addressing new and complex challenges in product development and
manufacturing operations; 2) planning and managing innovation
strategies of technological-based companies; and 3) developing and
implementing research programs in industrial environments.
The PhD program comprises a curricular part, industrial internships and a doctoral thesis.
The curricular part was jointly developed by MIT
and Portuguese academic leaders and addresses core areas in product
development, advanced manufacturing and industrial management, namely:
- Engineering Systems
- Fundamentals in Engineering Sciences
- Management
- Operations Analysis
- Production Management
- Engineering Research Methods
- Leadership
- Manufacturing Technology
- Product Development
- Technology Evaluation & Selection
Lectures and thesis orientation will be assured by
a prestigious academic staff with senior professors and researchers
from MIT (Engineering Systems Division), UMinho, FEUP an IST.
Selected students will be assigned to applied
research projects to be developed under the frame of the EDAM agenda in
cooperation with the Industrial Affiliates of the MIT-Portugal Program.
The development of the PhD thesis may involve additional internships at MIT or at the Industrial Affiliates of the program.
A limited number of grants will be available and
