Description

Over 50% of world’s population and 70% of the EU population lives in Cities, where all the fundamental resources converge.

Due to climate changes and global warming, the creation of wealth and the citizens’ well-being are confronted with the urgent need of environmental responsibility in the use of energy. The demand for environmental, social and economic sustainability requires that major Cities contribute to develop a new energy paradigm characterized by energy efficiency and by the use of renewable energies.

The Cascais Conference Series – Energy for Smart Cities –intends to:

  • Generate exchange of ideas that assemble and supports Cities in the accomplishment of their new role as energy managers;
  • Identify and approach the main issues regarding the planning, organization and development of Cities concerning energy and its socio-economic and environmental impact;
  • Help Cities to accomplish the EU goals for 2020, namely, CO2 emissions reduction, improve energy efficiency and increase the penetration of renewable energies through intervention in urban spaces and services using technological innovation mechanisms and sustained governmental policies.

This Conference will have the presence of the National Director of the MIT Portugal Program, Prof. Paulo Ferrão and members of the MIT Portugal faculty (Eduardo Oliveira Fernandes, FEUP, Vitor Leal, FEUP, Jorge Vasconcelos, IST, José Manuel Viegas, IST, Álvaro Martins, ISEG, and João Peças Lopes, INESC).
