Description

We announce the launch of a Videoconference Series to be carried out in a three-way partnership between the Center for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy, University of Dundee, Scotland; the University of Coimbra, Portugal; and the University of São Paulo. This initiative aims to expose undergraduate and graduate students to international themes related to energy. It also serves as a memorial to the recently deceased Prof. Thomas Walde.

The first videoconference will be led by the charismatic Prof. Philip Andrews-Speed, Director of the Center for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy and an expert in Chinese energy issues. He will address the following challenge: "At these moments of international financial crisis, will China become the world banker for financing the global natural resources?”

The videoconference will take place at Faculty of Economics, Keynes room, from 16 to 18h. There are two papers available, by Prof. Andrews-Speed.

The question raised by Prof. Philip Andrews-Speed is extremely relevant for Brazil and Portugal (in general) and for Brazilian energy company Petrobras (in particular), because the company just published its new extremely aggressive Business Plan, which will demand financial capabilities beyond Petrobras’ self-financial possibilities as well as Brazil’s availability of public and private savings.
