The first MIT Portugal International Industry Roundtable (IIR) on New Technologies for Health took place in February 2016 and was a resounding success, with a full room, world-‐ class speakers and several concrete business and research collaborations started or strengthened during the event.
This second Healthcare IIR will be dedicated to the topics of wearable devices and health/fitness monitoring technologies. It will deal with how new technologies and business models are empowering patients and radically changing the role of physicians. It will also aim to show how new entrepreneurial projects are contributing to this change and what challenges these projects face, in Portugal and elsewhere. Questions to be tackled range from how the IoT and smart textiles are bridging healthcare and so-‐called traditional industries, to how permanent access to health/fitness data is changing our lives and the practice of medicine itself.
This roundtable will be hosted by Healthcare City at the newly opened facilities ofCEDOC, in the School of Medical Sciences of NOVA University (Lisbon), and will bring together (1) scientists and engineers from the bio-‐sensor, smart textiles, health apps and related fields, (2) leaders from the retail, telecommunications and medtech industries, (3) entrepreneurs opening new business avenues in related areas, and (4) MIT Portugal students.
The event will have speakers from MIT, Fraunhofer, PLUX, Kinematix, and a fantastic group of fast-growing Medtech and Digital Health start-ups. Among the audience we have confirmed the presence of representatives from José de Mello Saúde, Sonae, SYTE Institute, Coimbra Hospital and University Center, Champalimaud Foundation, Start-up Braga, Caixa Capital, ALCEA Advisors, P-BIO, Portugal Ventures, Hovione Capital, Busy Angels, among many others.
The event is compulsory for first-year EDAM and Bioengineering doctoral students. All other MIT Portugal students and faculty are very welcome but must register online.
